"My First Desert Race"
It
was a hot summer day in Las Vegas, Nevada. Trucks lined up in front, behind me,
and one beside me. Heart beating intensely, adrenaline coursing through my
veins, engines roaring, the flag drops! Ever since I was a young boy I was
always interested in cars and speed. My favorite days were those where I spent
my afternoons playing cars in front of my home where the grass faded into dirt.
The different shapes, heights, and colors of the toy cars were so interesting
to me. As I grew older, my attraction for larger vehicles increased. The
rumbling of my bedroom window provoked by the deep cries of big eight cylinder
engines triggered glorious thoughts of the day in which I would be in control
of my own.
It was at the age of
eleven when my childhood dreams of driving had become true; I was finally able
to feel the vibrations of the turning motor through my hands. When I reached my
high school years, I often borrowed my mother’s sport truck to go to school.
Being at the age that I was, doing sit still burnouts and speeding off when the
street light turned green was when I discovered the awesome feeling of
adrenaline rushing through my blood as I sped away. I was finally in control of
a machine I have always longed for.

Driving street cars was
great, but my real passion was desert racing in a trophy truck. High horsepower
combined with off road suspension was the perfect combination which made me
feel unstoppable. The race was on and I was side by side with my opponent. Both
trucks clawing at the earth with their massive tires and each driver pushing
our trucks to the max in order to get the front lead over the other. Unfortunately,
I got the second position and I had to suffer the lack of visibility and the
bombarding of small rocks and sand flying through my windshield-less truck for
a moment. I backed off the gas to get out of that cloud of dust in order to get
a better view of the track. Unpredictable track obstacles and impediments could
wipe you out of the race completely. Hitting a rock the size of a bowling ball
in a vulnerable section of the truck could have led to disaster. Rolling
through dunes the size of ditches is just one the capabilities these trucks can
drive through. High horsepower engines and long travel suspension are just a
couple components needed to get through the race. Rushing through the Nevada
desert, I passed a few unfortunate opponents that had wrecked or stopped to fix
a mechanical failure. I realized how close I was to finishing the race. I see
the crowd and my team mates by the finish line. I finally roll in past the
finish line and stop the truck and see a team mate running towards me to inform
me that I had won the race; the first professional race of my life! The joy was
unexplainable.
